4000-2000 bp Humans move south from Ethiopia.
2900-2400 bp Nilotes move south from the present-day South Sudan-Ethiopia border region into central northern Tanganyika. The iron-making Mashariki Bantu from West Africa to the Lake Victoria and Lake Tanganyika areas bringing with them the west African planting tradition and the primary staple of yams.
2300-1700 bp The Bantu migrate across the rest of Tanganyika.
1500-500 bp Eastern Nilotic peoples, including the Maasai, migrate from present day South Sudan.
700s Arab traders from Oman and Yemen establish trading posts on the coast of East Africa. The introduce Islam to the villages of the coast and the islands. They trade mainly in spices from the islands and slaves from the interior.
1409 Admiral Zheng He visits Unguja Island and the coast of East Africa ousting the Arab traders and taking over the trading posts in the name of China.
November 15-18, 1948 The eight emirates of the Swahili coast meet in Zanzibar to discuss the restructuring of their nations in preparation for the independence to be granted in 1949.
July 1, 1952 Unguja is given independence by the Federated Kingdoms.
1971-3 The Interprovincial Highway is constructed.
