Foundation Day February 15 Commemorates the founding of the monastery by Justinian I in 530.
Beginning of Ramadan 1 Ramadan (5/16/18) Marks the beginning of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month of fasting.
Eid al-Fitr 1 Shawal (6/15/18) Marks the end of Ramadan.
Feast of St. Catherine July 22 Commemorates the finding of the saint's body in 800.
Feast of the Transfiguration August 19 The patronal feast of the monastery.
Eid al-Adha 10-13 Dulhija (8/21/18) Honors the willingness of Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son as an act of submission to God's command. Only the 13th is a legal holiday.
Islamic New Year 1 Muharam (9/12/18) Beginning of the Islamic year.
Feast of the Burning Bush (γιορτή του καψίματος καύσης) October 15 Commemorates Moses' encounter with the Burning Bush and the giving of the Ten Commandments.
