- You're right. Perhaps it was started by Christians. But there are several other cross-shaped emblems in Turkestani symbology - notably the yurt smokehole that appears in the flag of Turkestani Qazaqstan (below), but also several varieties of Qazaq, Kirghiz and Qaraqalpaq traditional decoration. It doesn't necessarily have to be Christian at all.
